Pakistani embroidery is not one craft, it's at least a dozen, of which four make up the vast majority of bridal work. Zardozi, dabka, tilla, and resham. If a sketch shows "heavy gold work" without specifying which, your studio is being lazy. The choice changes the look, the weight, the cost, and the lead time.
Why technique matters
An embroidered piece feels different depending on what's holding the design together. Zardozi sits raised, almost sculptural. Dabka is shinier and lighter. Tilla flat and traditional. Resham softer and more painterly. A bride who knows the difference asks better questions at her first consultation and gets a more specific piece in return.
Zardozi
Zardozi (Persian for "sewing with gold") is the heaviest of the four. Metallic wire is placed in raised motifs, flowers, paisleys, geometric medallions, held down with stitches that disappear into the design. The motif sits noticeably above the fabric. In photographs it catches light from multiple angles, which is why bridal pieces destined for evening photographs often lean zardozi-heavy.
Weight: heavy. A fully zardozi-worked lehenga can weigh six to nine kilos. Plan for support undergarments and a short walk to the stage.
Time: a single karigar can place one full motif in two to four hours depending on size. A bridal piece typically has 30-80 motifs.
Best for: Barat, walima, anything photographed under low light.
Dabka
Dabka is a tightly coiled metallic wire, cut into short lengths and sewn onto the fabric like beads. It catches light brilliantly, if zardozi is about volume, dabka is about shimmer.
Often paired with zardozi (zardozi for the structural motifs, dabka as the highlight). A pure dabka piece is rare in bridals; you'll see it more often in formal wear and reception pieces.
Weight: moderate, lighter than zardozi.
Best for: Reception, Nikkah, evening formal wear.
Tilla
Tilla is flat metallic thread, stitched into the fabric rather than coiled. The effect is more traditional, more restrained, the design reads as drawn rather than raised. Common in older bridal pieces and currently making a quiet comeback among brides who want something less ostentatious.
Weight: light.
Best for: Nikkah, mehndi (especially in pastels), heritage-leaning brides.
Resham
Silk thread embroidery, usually in colour, often floral. The painterly, soft option. Sometimes combined with sequins or pearls. Resham doesn't have the metallic shine of the other three; instead it adds depth and palette.
Weight: very light.
Best for: Mehndi, daytime events, pieces that need movement and softness over structure.

A practical tip
Don't mix all four in one piece. Two is the maximum that reads well, usually zardozi as the structural work plus one accent technique (dabka or resham). A piece with all four becomes visually busy and the eye has nowhere to rest.How to choose for your piece
Three questions narrow it down quickly:
- What is the event lighting? Low evening light favours zardozi and dabka. Daytime favours tilla and resham.
- How long will you wear the piece? Anything over four hours in a heavy zardozi piece is uncomfortable. Plan accordingly.
- What's your budget per motif? Heavy zardozi can be three to four times the per-motif cost of tilla. The technique choice often comes down to this.
